Hospital Care for Parents in India — A Guide for NRIs in Australia

Australia's Indian diaspora is concentrated in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, and Perth. If you are an Australian NRI and your parents live in India, the combination of distance, time zones, and work commitments can make hospital care coordination feel overwhelming. This guide breaks the process into clear, practical steps.

From Sydney and Melbourne to smaller cities, Australian NRIs often have parents in Delhi, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, or Kolkata. The flight is long, and the time gap with India is roughly 4.5 to 5.5 hours. That makes early planning and a trusted local partner essential for managing hospital visits.

1. Prepare a medical-at-distance plan

Start with a simple plan: the preferred hospital, the nearest 24-hour alternative, the family doctor's number, the insurance/TPA helpline, and a local contact in India with house access. Share this with siblings and close relatives in Australia and India. Update it whenever a new medicine or diagnosis is added.

2. Use Australia's strong remittance links to India

Most Australian banks and remittance services send money to India quickly. Keep an emergency medical balance in an Indian account that a trusted local can access. This covers deposits, medicine purchases, and transportation before insurance is finalised.

3. Schedule around Sydney and Melbourne time zones

India is 4.5 to 5.5 hours behind Australia. A morning appointment in India is mid-morning in Sydney or Melbourne, while an evening discharge is late evening in Australia. Build a call and update schedule with your companion so the timing works for your household.

4. Verify hospitals, TPAs, and cashless networks early

Not every hospital accepts every TPA. Before a planned admission, confirm the insurer/TPA tie-up, the room category rules, and the list of non-payable items. Corelatin companions can collect the forms and queue at the insurance desk, then share the details with you in Australia. We are not a TPA and do not approve claims, but we make sure your family's side of the paperwork is complete.

5. A companion keeps you close to the process

Whether you are in Sydney, Melbourne, or elsewhere, a hospital companion is your real-time link to your parent's visit. They help with registration, queue management, report collection, and clear updates. You stay informed without having to book a flight for every appointment.
