Hospital Care for Parents in India — A Guide for NRIs in Canada

Canada has one of the fastest-growing Indian diasporas, with large communities in the Greater Toronto Area, Vancouver, Calgary, and Montreal. If you are a Canadian NRI and your parents are in India, this guide shows how to arrange hospital companionship, appointment coordination, and real-time updates from across the Pacific.

Indian-Canadian families often span two households: one in a city like Toronto or Vancouver, and one in Punjab, Haryana, Maharashtra, or Karnataka. When a parent needs a hospital visit, the distance and time difference can make a simple appointment feel complicated. A clear plan and a trusted local companion can change that.

1. Build a Canada-India care file

Keep a digital folder with your parents' Indian medical records, prescriptions, insurance cards, and a list of preferred hospitals. Share it with family in both countries. This folder is useful for routine visits, emergencies, and for any new specialist your parent sees.

2. Plan calls around the India-Canada time gap

India is 9.5 to 12.5 hours ahead of Canada, depending on the province and daylight saving. A 10 AM hospital appointment in India can be late evening or night in Canada. Ask your companion to send a written summary immediately after the visit, so you can read it when you wake up and follow up with the doctor's office during Indian working hours.

3. Move money before it is urgent

Canadian NRIs can transfer money through bank wires, remittance apps, or pre-loaded NRE accounts. Keep a medical emergency balance in India. Hospitals often ask for deposits before admission, and pharmacies may need cash for medicines that are not included in the cashless panel. Corelatin companions can help with payment-related paperwork and receipts, but we do not process insurance claims or medical billing.

4. Use a companion for routine and emergency visits

Not every hospital visit needs a flight to India. For regular check-ups, dialysis, scans, and specialist follow-ups, a hospital companion can represent the family, take notes, and bring your parent home. For emergencies, a companion can reach the hospital first and help with triage and admission while you arrange travel from Canada.

5. Stay involved through real-time updates

Knowing is half the stress. With Corelatin, you receive updates at arrival, during the consultation, and after discharge. This keeps you close to the process even when you are in Toronto, Vancouver, or anywhere in Canada.
